The Science Behind the Size of the Tyre

For us, a tyre is just a link between the vehicle and road. To our untrained eyes, the sides of the tyres might look a meaningless set of numbers, letters and symbols. But these are the important parameters determining the various tyre sizes. Regardless of the manufacturer, the size of the tyres is indicated on the tyre sidewall.

The sides of the tyres also confirm the company brand, the maximum operating inflation pressure allowed, the maximum load-carrying capacity and the model type. But first things first, let’s study and know about science and interesting facts about tyres.

Cross Section Width: It is the measurement from the tyre’s inner sidewall to its outer sidewall. It is measured in millimetres. For eg: Let’s say that if the tyre size read as X123/45 R67 89 V. Then the first three numbers (123) refer to the section width of the tyre.

Aspect Ratio: It refers to the height of the sidewalls as a % of the section width. In the above example, 45 means the height id equal to 45% of the 123 width. So, the bigger the aspect ratio, the bigger the sidewall will be.

Construction Type: The middle letter R, in the above example,e depicts the radial construction of the tyre.

Rim: The number to the right of the construction type is the rim diameter, measured in inches. So, if you are buying wheels for existing tyres, this is the size you will require.  For eg: In X123/45 R67 89 V, the rim is 67 inches.

Load Index: The final number is the load index, i.e. the maximum load (in kg) that the tyre can carry.

Speed Symbol: The last character (in this case, V) relates to the maximum speed of use.

The number stated above is taken here, for example, for a better understanding and the actual numbers are very different from these. You can find the car’s tyre size on the tyres’ sidewall.
