The Tryst of Tyres with Covid19

With the lockdown going for a long time now, many industries are taking the brunt of fighting their inventory issues. The demand for tyres has almost vanished in this lockdown. But the inventory kept with tyre manufacturers has almost risen to a month’s worth of production. This is quite a high number taking into consideration the previous records of inventory built up and sale of tyres.

Since the lockdown started in March 2020, the entire quantity of tyre production is stockpiled in the factory warehouse. In fact, manufacturers are facing the issue of tyre storage. Now the only option left with them is plan production cuts for the subsequent months to balance out the excess.

Few factors that several industries, including the tyre industry, have to watch out for are:

  • To continue the broken supply chain
  • To make manufacturing agile
  • To react ably towards the changing market conditions

Rubber Industry

One industry that is hugely impacted by the manufacturing debacle of the tyres is the rubber industry. The rubber industry in India dates back to 1921, and since then it has been growing and expanding. The industry also saw a huge technological evolution since post-independence era. Today India is the:

  • 4th largest producer of natural rubber
  • 2nd largest consumer of natural rubber
  • 5th largest consumer of natural and synthetic rubber together

A wide range of rubber products is manufactured by the Indian rubber industry that serves industries like civil, aviation, the three wings of defence, railways, agriculture, transport etc. The classification of this industry can be done into:

  • Tyre
  • Non-Tyre

The tyre sector produces all types of tyres of auto tyres, conventional and radial tyre and exports to foreign nations.
